Camp Elcho residents move back in

Posted: 31 March 2015

Galiwinku residents were able to return to Camp Elcho over the weekend after sheltering from Tropical Cyclone Nathan.

The temporary accommodation located on the community oval was recently taken down while the cyclone passed through the area.

Camp Elcho includes heavy duty shelters with floors that can safely accommodate around 300 residents in the short term while homes are repaired.

Galiwinku families and individuals were able to move back in on Saturday and Sunday after the temporary accommodation was re-established by a hard-working team comprised of NT Emergency Services, NT Fire and Rescue Service, NSW Rural Fire Service and community members.

A total of 32 shelters have been set up with an additional five tents for shade and communal areas.

Longer term accommodation options are being developed with community leaders so the camp can be closed.

The longer term accommodation will be provided for families whose house will need to be rebuilt or have major works.

Government will continue talking with residents of affected communities about how the rebuilding program can support a strong future and real jobs for Yolngu.
